Despite the departure of organist Matthew Fisher, Procol Harum survived, and this album is ample proof. Fisher was one of the prime architects of the Harum sound, and his work on such classics as "Shine on Brightly" and, of course, "Whiter Shade of Pale" underline that. Procol continued as a four-piece, and it was indeed a good thing that they decided not to replace Fisher. The sound of the band on this album is a bit sparser, but definitely not without dimension and dynamics. "Simple Sister," one of the finest Gary Brooker/Keith Reid compositions, is truly glorious, with Robin Trower's frightening lead guitar work juxtaposed nicely against a wonderful string arrangement. Several other tracks are first rate, including "Power Failure" and "Playmate of the Mouth." Along with Little Feat, Procol Harum was a great survivor among rock bands that have lost a key member. The proof is in these grooves.

For those who may have missed our recent auction of this album on Mobile Fidelity Compact Disc - take heart! This original vinyl LP is the next best thing. Namely, this beautiful album has been out of print and unavailable in any format whatsoever for well over 15 years now. This album comes in a beautiful original UNIPAK die-cut cover, and the vinyl itself is mint, first pressing (tan/brown A&M label, circa 1971). To make things even better, Brooker and Reid have never been creatively stronger, and this album is their artistic and performing peak. If you have to own one particular album by PROCOL HARUM, go for this one. In addition to the classic "Simple Sister", (which has got to be one of my favorite 70’s anthems), the album contains "Song to a dreamer" (Jimi Hendrix) a timeless paean to a departed guitar hero. Actually - in my judgment - the entire album does not have a single bad or substandard track. Don't miss the chance to hear this great album in its original form. (a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS (WEAK) NEAR MINT !

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.  Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has a few pressure points and lines (pressure lines from erased small price code)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No ring wear

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
