'Grand Hotel'

Chrysalis, UK, 1973

CHR 1037

THE GRAND old men of progressive rock continued to impress and surprise us with a cavalcade of fine albums throughout the seventies helping to put to rest the ball and chain of 'Whiter Shade Of Pale'.

'Grand Hotel' was an adventurous affair - not exactly a concept album - but a damn fine statement of intent following the previous years live album 'Live In Concert With The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra'. Fusing the bands penchant for symphonic excess the music here straddles the need to comply with their past form yet reach out to the future with shorter concise tracks. Gary Brooker's voice is still on fine form - instantly identifiable and beautifully crisp - whilst guitars are handled by ex Cochise man Mick Grabham depping for Dave Ball who had recently left for pastures fresh.

Unofficial fith member Keith Reid provides, as usual, all lyrical contributions.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
