Henry “Pucho” Brown was one of the most imaginative musicians to ever merge black and Latin styles, a key player in the soulful, jazzified, and all-around funky movement known as the Latin boogaloo. Between 1966 and 1969, he and his band released eight fiery albums on the Prestige label, culminating with 1969′s seminal psychedelic soul offering, Jungle Fire.

Blessed with a formidable gathering of Soul Brothers, the album features pianist and composer Neal Creaque, versatile guitar master Billy Butler, funky rhythm king Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, along with a supporting cast of lesser known but highly inspired players. Under Pucho’s steady hand, the band blazes through the real meat of the record…the three extended covers of songs written by Motown legends Norman Whitfield & Barrett Strong and originally recorded by Gladys Knight & The Pips and the Temptations: “The Friendship Train,” “I Finally Got Myself A Good Man,” and “Cloud 9.” Pucho transforms these classic songs, dropping the vocals and expanding upon their molten musical core of catchy hooks, fuzz & wah tinged guitar, pulsing bass, and earth shattering drum breaks. It’s heady stuff.

Give the album a spin, and soon you’ll find that riding inside a Pucho groove is a bit like flying on Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon—it might never launch into warp speed, but you’re guaranteed one hell of a ride. Three decades after they were recorded, Pucho’s Whitfield/Strong repertoire gained the distinction of being some of the most savored and oft-sampled staples of the British acid-jazz movement. While a lot of fine music was inspired by Pucho (and Whitfield/Strong for that matter), my suggestion is skip today’s middle men and go directly to the source. Jungle Fire is the Latin funk motherload.

Quite possibly the rarest Pucho album -- and also one of the greatest!

You have not lived until you have heard Pucho in action!!!!  His grooves are sexy, sultry, funky, exotic, seductive, groovy, melancholic,  spiritual and wildly danceable all at the same time.  If you are a bass player, please DO NOT play this album: you will get terminally depressed and will end up on Prozac (or worse) and quit playing altogether.  What Seaborn Westbrook (Pucho's bassman) does with his instrument is nothing short of mind-blowing.  You MUST hear it to believe it.  Move over Aston "Family Man" Barrett,  James Jamerson, Chris Hillman, Paul McCartney and John Paul Jones -- please make way for the King Of Bass -- Mr. Seaborn Westbrook!!!

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new (MINOR, superficial "hairline" scuff noted on side 1, track 2)

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the top seam

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
