PURPLE PIRATE ORCHESTRA
"TIGER RAG / CHINA BOY"
CONDITION: Challenging! - See Notes Below
( this is an extremely poor Paramount private pressing with VERY uneven
surfaces, multiple bumps, ridges and furrows! The surfaces have the
appearance of severe heat damage but here is no warping, little wear
and no impact on the underlying sound, which plays around "E"; both sides
will play through but will need extra stylus weight and patience! )

Incredibly RARE private recording made by the Purple Pirate Orchestra of Williams College,
Williamstown, Mass. "78 Quarterly" estimated that there were "less than 5 known copies"
which is probably a slight exaggeration, but it rarely turns up for sale. The Cornet solo on
"Tiger Rag" closely follows Bix Beiderbecke's solo on the Wolverines version recorded for
Gennett in 1924. This is somewhat surprising since the Gennett was only ever issued as
a private test pressing and only given to the members of the "Wolverine Orchestra".
It's most likely that the Cornetist with the "Purple Pirate Orchestra" copied Red Nichols' solo
on the 1925 recording of "Tiger Rag" with the "California Ramblers" which itself was
lifted from the Bix original. Red Nichols almost certainly obtained a private pressing of
"Tiger Rag" when he met up with Bix in 1924. This copy originally belonged to British
collector and Bix enthusiast Ralph Venables and eventually found it's way onto the shelves of
sound engineer extraordinaire John R.T. Davies
