Gregorio Paniagua - LA FOLIA (Ancient Spanish Music) - ATR Mastercut German Pressing of Harmonia Mundi HM 1050 - ATR 013 LP - SIMPLY AWESOME!
There comes a time in your search for the grail, in music, in audio, when, by surprise, you suddenly find yourself astounded, speechless, carted helplessly off someplace else.
Perhaps Moravec playing a Chopin Nocturne stopped you cold. Or Thomas Murray at the organ at Jamaica Plains. Whatever it is for you, by my measure it is called LA FOLIA, a beautiful Paniagua ancient music study, captured by Harmonia Mundi, but here re-mastered and re-pressed by the audiophile cadre at ATR, Germany. (I dare say, perhaps the very finest pressing house in the world.)
It is as natural an audio capture as I have ever heard, with a noise floor so low, you absolutely, positively hear everything.
That said, please note that this is the "thinner" release, preferred in my view, for one very special moment.
At the beginning of side 2 there is a long flute solo that, yes, ends with cracks from a bullwhip. Now, I am not exaggerating here, not in the least when I say, it is by far the most explosive moment in music I have ever witnessed from vinyl. Fact is, it can shock you big-time, the sound of it quite amazing and entirely compressed on later pressings.
Note that this ATR copy is like new in all ways, the record within all ashine and wonderfully kept. Note, too, if you are going to (ahem) surprise someone you know with the section of music I just described, please be sure they do not have a heart condition. I am totally serious here. Be very careful with this. But once you have it down, volume right, it will astound you, I promise.
Among the few elite records on the planet without fault, in my view. A masterful enterprise of music and the pressing thereof.
