Back in 1994 I was a fulltime music writer. Technically I still am, but not really, which is kind of a long story. Anyway, my job entailed getting a lot of free records and one of them was this vinyl copy of Pearl Jam's "Vitalogy," which arrived well in advance of the street date in order to facilitate a timely review.

When I pulled this off the shelf it still had some of the promo material tucked into the sleeves. Most notable is a copy of the album's first single, "Spin the Black Circle," on 7-inch vinyl. It's the only part of the package clearly marked as promotional, as you can see in photo No. 3. Typically, Epic Records didn't mark or stamp the jackets of its 12-inch promo vinyl at that time. There's also a leftover remnant of the press kit, a reprint of a Los Angeles Time article, but the rest of the press material was gone. The booklet is here, of course, as seen in photo Nos. 5 & 6.

Epic (through Columbia) used to send vinyl and CD copies to the press as a package deal; this is back when the labels had money to burn. It's a lot easier to review a CD, bouncing from track to track, which means that this vinyl is unplayed. Or maybe I played it once to see how it sounded compared to the CD. At any rate, I had forgotten I had it until a couple of days ago so it's been sitting safely since 1994 and looks it. I can without doubt describe this as NM.

As you probably know, promo copies are obviously first pressings and are from early in the run, when the stamper is fresh and the quality high. What I'm trying to say is that this is a pristine copy of a promotional first pressing of an out-of-print Pearl Jam record and you really should buy it.
