I was determined to keep vinyl alive in my collection during the late '90s, and oftentimes would buy what came into the local Sam's on vinyl. Selections were getting rarer and rarer, and this was one of less than 10 new LPs in stock at the time (I'm happy to say they've since rebuilt their vinyl selection to impressive proportions :) ). Pearl Jam had absolutely wowed me when I'd make an impulse purchase of "Vitalogy" on the CD's day of release. I soon followed up the CD purchase with an LP purchase, and later on purchased LP copies of "No Code" and this one. Due to my relative disappointment with "No Code", most likely I didn't give this one much of a chance despite buying it. Listening to it this past week (ensuring there are no noticeable clicks or skips), I was surprised as to how I could have missed noticing how solid this album really is... but as this is one of my lesser-played albums and I'm looking to free up space in my collection while building up funds for future purchases, I figure someone else who loves this album even more than I do might be interesting in bidding as low as 1/4 of the price others are listing their copies for straight-out purchase on eBay.
At the time this LP was released, Canadian record companies had long taken to the practice of importing US editions instead of pressing their own in Canada, and this was no exception: the shrink-wrap (folded and kept inside the cover for safe-keeping) still sports the "Sony Import" sticker. This means this is the original pressing from the band's home country. Die-cut cover edition with original triangular sticker untouched. The auction's photos show all the relative imperfections of this LP copy which has held rather well with age: scuff/nick on lower edge of outer sleeve, partial ungluing on one side of picture inner sleeve (which was rather tightly holding a sharp-edged vinyl from the day of purchase); a very shallow grouping of indentations in the vinyl label for Side 2, as well as a bit of extra vinyl compound which still remains attached at the spindle hole; slightly visible scuffing which does not affect play (and I played the whole album; I've been told by record shop employees and fellow vinyl enthusiasts that these stuffings can also occur due to the record being pressed while the record press machine is not yet at, or has surpassed, the optimal pressing temperature), a bit of inner sleeve bending along the edge where the vinyl was tightly held in its sleeve... Given the manufacture of this particular LP, I doubt you will find a copy out there that has absolutely none of these imperfections whatsoever. Rarely played (four times at most), and most importantly sounds nice and analog. I won't cry if this doesn't sell ;) but I figure for those of you who've been watching the towering prices on the other copies for a while now, you might be happy to see a copy with an opening price of less than $100.
I'm a stickler for detail, and rarely give anything higher than a VG+++, but the vinyl here could merit a M- (I just won't give it, to grade conservatively). Due to the imperfections seen in the photos, I'll only give a VG+ to the inner and outer sleeves, and the originally included sticker basically looks untouched. This is a copy worth picking up if you want one that plays great without having to pay from $130 to over $400 for a copy.
