Up for sale is a very nice copy of a private press LP featuring the talents of a wonderful soprano, who became a faculty member at Duke University.  It is INSCRIBED AND SIGNED by a major figure in the Cleveland, Ohio classical music scene, who also composed the song cycles on Side 2 of the record.

Soprano Penelope Jensen was born in Denver, Colorado.  She received he college degree from Ponoma College in Claremont, California and her Master of Arts Degree from Harvard University.  She studied under Mme. Olga Averino, Burton Garlinghouse, Pierre Bernac, and John Wustman.  By the time she recorded this record (1980), she had been guest soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra (numerous times), as well as with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, and many other major orchestras.  She was a member of the Cleveland Baroque Soloists and was on the faculty of the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute.  Jensen was already living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  She would go on to win the Franz Schubert Prize for the singing of German art songs and to serve as Instructor of Music at Duke University (her current position).

Klaus George Roy was born in Vienna in 1924.  Born to a Jewish mother, he and his family emigrated to the United States in 1940.  Roy studied at Boston University and Harvard University where he was taught by many notables including Walter Piston.  From 1948 to 1957, he was librarian and instructor in music criticism and composition at the Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts.  He was also a music critic for the Christian Science Monitor.  In 1958, he was recruited by George Szell to become the Director of Publications and Program Book Editor of The Cleveland Orchestra.  He was known for his pre-concert lectures and his intermission interviews at performances of The Cleveland Orchestra and for hosting nationally syndicated broadcasts originating from radio station WCLV.  He also taught at several institutions of higher learning in and around Cleveland, all while remaining active as a composer.  He died, a much beloved figure in Cleveland, in 2010, at age 86.

In 1993, Roy published a book which directly relates to his inscription on this album.  It reads:

"For Janice Harayda - with great appreciation of her extensive, perceptive, and kindly review of (title of Roy's book) 11/21/93 and with all good wishes from Klaus G. Roy 11/22/93."

(Janice Harayda was a book editor and critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer.  She has also published two novels of her own.)
