Description

Over the years A&M Records released many great artists and also pioneered many unusual releases. In 1978 the label released its Peter Frampton Picture Disc commemorating the success of “Frampton Comes Alive". This 12” vinyl picture disc has been in this plastic sleeve since I received it 40 years ago. I have not removed the disc from the sleeve, or played the disc and I cannot tell you which tracks are on this edited version of Frampton Comes Alive. As the gold colored stamp indicates on the plastic sleeve, this was promotional, that is a “Demonstration Copy” given to me by Frampton's (then) manager.

Background: “Frampton Comes Alive!” was the double live album by English musician and songwriter Peter Frampton, released in January 1976 by A&M Records. It was then, and remains today, one of the best-selling live albums of all time. "Show Me the Way", "Baby, I Love Your Way", and "Do You Feel Like We Do" were all released as singles; all three reached the top 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and frequently receive airplay on classic rock radio stations. Following four studio albums with some commercial success, this double live album was a breakthrough for Frampton. It was in the top 10 (and often number one) and it

  1. was the best-selling album of 1976, 
  2. with sales of more than 8 million copies in the US, and 
  3. becoming one of the best-selling live albums sever, with estimated sales of 20 million worldwide.
  4. The album was voted "Album of the Year" in a 1976 Rolling Stone readers' poll. 
  5. It remained on the chart for 97 weeks and was still No. 14 on Billboard's 1977 year-end album chart. It was ranked No. 41 on Rolling Stone's "50 Greatest Live Albums of All Time" list.
  6. 35 years after its release, readers of Rolling Stone ranked it No. 3 in a 2012 poll of all-time favorite live albums.
