This handsome LP from RCA (LSC-3021, US pressing, white dog label, 2S/4S stampers, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features the legendary Gregor Piatigorsky in magnificent accounts of Mendelsson’s Cello Sonata No. 2 in D Major Op. 58 and Richard Strauss’ Cello Sonata in F Major Op. 6, both recorded with the splendid pianist Leonard Pennario in 1968.

Of a Testament CD re-issue of these performances (SBT 1419), the erudite critic Mike D. Brownell wrote for The All Music Guide:

“Recorded between 1966 and 1968, Gregor Piatigorsky delivers firmly shaped readings of three cello sonatas, vividly transferred from original RCA Victor masters. One of the most important and prominent musicians of his time, Gregor Piatigorsky heralds from a time that could be referred to as the Golden Age of Cellists. His contemporaries included such luminaries as Fournier, Tortelier, Starker, and Rostropovich, to name but a few. Yet Piatigorsky still managed to tread his own path both in his own playing as well as his recorded legacy. This album features cello sonatas of Mendelssohn (#2 in D major), Chopin, and Strauss, each recorded in the mid-'60s. Piatigorsky had a penchant for chamber music collaborations with some of the greatest musicians the world has known (Horowitz, Heifetz, Rubinstein) and this album is no different, especially considering the profound performance of Rudolf Firkusny in the Chopin sonata. One of Piatigorsky's strengths had always been his clean -- some would say lean -- tone. Particularly in some of the densely scored chamber music he often performed, this type of tone ensured that the cello could always be heard. Such is the case here, as well, where every note of Piatigorsky's playing is easily audible over even the busiest of piano parts.”

This album was produced by Howard Scott and engineered by Ivan Fischer and Paul Goodman. There are superlative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Albert Goldberg, Music Critic of the Los Angeles Times.The striking cover design is uncredited, alas.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There are some smudges of discoloration, as well as light edgewear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
