Planet Hemp is a pioneering Brazilian rap-rock band, known for their energetic fusion of hip-hop, rock, and reggae, often with politically charged lyrics advocating for the legalization of marijuana and criticizing social injustices. The band emerged in the early 1990s and quickly became a significant voice in Brazil’s music scene, challenging the status quo with their rebellious spirit.
"Usuário" (1995) Overview "Usuário" is Planet Hemp's debut album, released in 1995. The title "Usuário" translates to "User" in English, a reference to marijuana use, which is a central theme throughout the album. The record is a raw, unapologetic expression of the band’s ethos, combining aggressive guitar riffs, hip-hop beats, and politically charged lyrics. The album mixes elements of hardcore punk, rap, and reggae, creating a distinctive sound that resonated with a generation of Brazilian youth.
Tracks like “Legalize Já” and “Mantenha o Respeito” became anthems for the pro-legalization movement in Brazil, and the album as a whole is often regarded as a bold statement against governmental repression and social inequality. The album's production reflects the band's DIY roots, with a gritty, underground feel that complements its rebellious message.
"Usuário" is not only a significant cultural artifact of 1990s Brazil but also an influential record that laid the foundation for the band's continued success in blending genres and challenging societal norms.
