Another rarity here. (The) Plastic Penny were an adventurous, early psychedelic or early progressive rock band, depending on which tracks you listen to and your own interpretation. Between 1967 and 1970, they released three albums (including one compilation) and six singles. All these releases were on Page One Records.
None of the singles was successful, with the sole exception of the debut single, Everything I Am, which was a modest hit in 1967. The two albums Two Sides of a Penny (1968) and Currency (1969) also failed to launch the band into the big time. If you want a mark of the band’s rock credentials however, you just need to know that that Plastic Penny played the first ever Isle of Wight Festival in 1968 alongside rock legends Jefferson Airplane, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Fairport Convention and the Pretty Things.
Plastic Penny broke up after their second album but all the members went on to play with better known bands over the next few years. Mick Graham became a member of Procol Harum; Paul Raymond played with UFO, Savoy Brown and Chicken Shack; and Tony Murray eventually joined the Troggs; and vocalist, Brian Keith, sang lead with the Congregation who had a big hit in 1971. By far the most well known of Plastic Penny’s line up however is Nigel Olsonn a premier league session drummer who has been a mainstay of Elton John’s backing band, live and in the studio, for decades.
For sale here is an original demonstration copy of Plastic Penny’s fourth single She Does / Genevieve. The A-side is a guitar heavy freak-out, which sounds ahead of its time. The B-side is a rather more restrained rock ballad.
This example of the record is in very good condition. Only the faintest of surface marks are visible and they take some time to spot but there is light crackling in the two quiet passages of Genevieve. This may be caused by static I guess. The A-side looks and sounds absolutely fine. The labels are clean and bright as you can see, and the original sleeve is in nice, straight condition.
