Description

This is a winning trifecta for the ‘surf’ lover on your gift list.  An original 1980 vinyl stereo LP, Pray for Surf by the Packards.  It has (1) great Paul Johnson surf-instrumental music, (2) front cover photo by John Severson and (3) back cover art work by Rick Griffin.  The Packards included Paul Johnson (Guitar), Chris Darrow (Bass & Dobro) and John Russell (Drums).  The eight songs included are Mr. Moto, Andele’, Windshield Wiper, Lanky Bones, Bedlam, Tally Ho, Lure of the Curl and Squad Car.  The record is new in the original, unopened cover.  Winning bidder will pay postage (plus $1 handling), insurance if requested, and sales tax.  Payment is to be made through PayPal.  No combined shipping on this item (Media Mail).  Please e-mail questions - Good Luck.

 

Paul Johnson & The Packards were to the surf-revival of the '80s what the Bel-Airs were to the “first-wave” in the '60s — a pioneer band that played a major role in defining the form.  As you will hear on these tracks The Packards sought to make surf-instrumental music that was true to its roots, yet relevant to a new day.

Paul Johnson was one of the founding fathers of surf guitar, writing the 1961 classic "Mr. Moto" for his band the Bel-Airs.  He floated around the genre for years after their breakup, eventually helping the revival of the genre with his work with the Packards in the '80s.  The '90s found him joining the Surfaris for touring purposes, as well as helping to form the Duo-Tones with "Pipeline" author Gil Orr.  Throughout it all, he also released several solo releases that were a hit in the surf rock underground.  FROM All Music

Richard Alden "Rick" Griffin (June 18, 1944 – August 18, 1991) was an American artist and one of the leading designers of psychedelic posters in the 1960s. As a contributor to the underground comix movement, his work appeared regularly in Zap Comix. Griffin was closely identified with the Grateful Dead, designing some of their best-known posters and album covers such as Aoxomoxoa. His work within the surfing subculture included both film posters and his comic strip, Murphy.  FROM Wikipedia
