Description
Giacomo Puccini: Madama Butterfly
Opera set in Japan, based upon the short story Madame Butterfly written in 1898 by John Luther Long. When it premiered in 1904 at the Teatro alla Scala it had two acts but was poorly received and subsequently revised with the second act split into two. The new version premiered in Brescia later that year to great success.
Featuring Maria Callas as Madama Butterfly and Nicolai Gedda as Pinkerton, with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro alla Scala, conducted by Herbert von Karajan, with Norberto Mola as chorus master.
Boxed set contains 3 records and an 8 page booklet covering the history and story of the opera. The whole set is in very good condition, the records having been recently played.
This is the full opera and not to be confused with the Highights version which comes in a similar cover.
This performance was recorded in 1955 and released in mono by Columbia, Serial No. 33CX 1296-8 as part of their Masterworks series.
