Description
QUEEN Hammer to Fall (Headbangers Mix) / Tear It Up – 12” withdrawn sleeve vinyl single release on EMI Records from 1984 (12 QUEEN 4).
You are bidding for an original UK pressing of this highly collectable single from Queen. The story goes that the live photo used on the sleeve was not by an official Queen photographer and the single was withdrawn at the last minute – unfortunately Woolworths had already taken delivery of a quantity of this version and failed to withdraw stock from sale which has resulted in this desirable and rare Queen item.
This single has been faked during the last two decades, but this copy is an ORIGINAL UK copy with a high gloss sleeve, flipbacks on the reverse of the sleeve, and the correct spelling for cassette. The black vinyl has the original printed silver on black labels. Matrix numbers on vinyl are 12 QUEEN 4 A-1-1-2-? and 12 QUEEN 4 B-1-1-2-5, it also has Penthouse pressed into the run out on the A side.
Visually the vinyl of this copy is really nice. It has a few very light surface marks but has probably only ever been played a couple of times (possibly just the A side due to the light spindle mark only visible on the B side label).
Playing the single confirms it to be a great copy and worthy of an Ex to Ex+ grading.
Obviously, collectors viewing this listing will really be looking at it for the sleeve. Unfortunately the sleeve has to be given a Vg- grading. The high gloss black sleeve shows two large marks where stickers have been removed. It is also suffering from ringwear / scuffing and creasing - but this said it is still a very desirable Queen collectable which you should be able to bag at a significantly cheaper price than a Mint copy.
What makes this a rather neat copy is the fact it still has a Woolworths dated purchase sticker inside the sleeve (see photo) which appears to confirm the story that these live sleeve editions did indeed come from Woolworths, although the 1985 date must mean this was old stock when it finally sold.
I hope the included photos confirm the pedigree and condition of the sleeve, but please contact me if you have any further questions.
Overall then I would grade item as Ex/Vg- (Vinyl/Sleeve).
