Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: very clean, fresh and attractive with just one faint spindle trace on each side that hardly even register. All evidence strongly suggests this very rare Dawn record has hardly been played.

Cat Number: DNLS 3056.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 125 grams. About average for it’s era.

Rarity: Rare: another one-off obscurity on Dawn, a label, almost like Vertigo (spiral era) that almost seemed to specialise in loss-leading acts with most selling and pressed in meagre numbers. Ironically, the band’s name was somewhat appropriate, this sunk without trace and is rarely seen or offered. This is a superb copy and very much worthy of note – this is superbly pressed and plays with hardly anything unwanted at all. As most experienced vinyl dealers and collectors will know, Dawn records were hugely inconsistent in pressing quality, but no fears with this one, it is pressed on top quality pure vinyl, hardly played, thus is sounds terrific.

Brief Info: The one and only album by Quicksand (not to be confused with an American band of the 1990s). Quicksand 1973 were a Welsh rock band with folk elements, issued on the Pye subsidiary label Dawn, and like several other titles – many famous and massively sort-after on this label, it came and went largely unnoticed selling in tiny numbers. Scant promotion or airplay for this and other gems from this time, and quickly deleted and forgotten. Information about Quicksand is limited also, the cover gives a brief overview of them only. Apparently they toured for a while with other blues-rock and progressive bands of the time, and those who have commented apparently rated them highly. However, the band folded around 1975 and made no other records. This a lovely clean example – the back cover does have a ‘Boots the Chemist’ stamp as seen on my close-up picture, and interestingly, it seems Boots were one regular source of these type of obscurities. My only ever copy of Vashti Bunyan’s ‘Just Another Diamond Day’ had the same stamp on that as well – and we all about that massive rarity. A few others of similar ilk I have seen before sold from the famous pharmacist chain. I think these stamps actually add character and history to a record and not to be derided. The stamp remains clear and unsmudged, that being the crucial factor. With the record, now on the very new Dawn rising sun format, being hardly played and pressed to a high standard, this is a fantastic copy for the rare vinyl collector. Not one that will be seen often or a great deal better. Highly recommended for those unfamiliar – indeed this is my very first copy on offer.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): this not taking into account of the Boots Chemist stamp on the back, that is nothing to do with wear, and purely a retailer mark as many covers of this era had. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, uncredited, but does have the Pye distribution credits.

Cover Front: A superb age-defying front with little to fault. Any surface trace marks are ultra faint and very few at all, these only seen with utmost scrutiny under angled light, there are no press marks or indentations. Very clean indeed and fresh with deep colour with no fading. A tiny few very fine edge hairline creases that barely any cover of this age can hope to avoid, but as fine and few as they get. Tiny corner tip rubs the same, and no sticker marks or tears. This apparently has been cover-protected for most all of its existence and it shows. Few will be found better, this cover is of upgrade quality.

Cover Back: Yes, the back has the ‘Boots the Chemist’ stamp as seen on my close-up picture, that seems a trais of all records sold by the famous pharmacist company. As stated, Boots seemed to stock the most obscure albums of the era, whereas many specialist record retailers probably never even thought about ordering this, and similar albums. Apart from the merest faintest hint of a rim rub near the top edge, this has little else to fault, and this is being ultra critical as it hardly even shows. These unprotected gatefolds rarely escape without often significant ringwear and other issues, this is nigh-on Mint(–).

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb, practically Mint as-made – little else needs to be added really.

Top Edges: Both very straight, clean, barely worn and sitting neatly flush together.

Bottom Edges: Practically as above with any rub traces tiny and light up to the corner tips that have only small rubs.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge has a real tucked and folded edge, not machine cut. This is again straight with barely any hint of wear. The back entrance edges are clean, mostly very sharp with any thickening or burring tiny and light as seen viewed end-on. Guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way, indeed the factory cut is not flush which reitterates the fact still further.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is near perfect with just the odd tiny letter clip seen up close, the white surface just lightly darkened over time, but this is still very impressive with even the fold hinges avoiding rubbing.

Corners: Small tip rubs only with all retaining very fine or better shape.

Cover Summary: A very impressive all-round example of this very rare and wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This superb item should please most-all collectors (if the Boots stamp is not an issue).

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably better still. A basic plain white unlaminated open inner sleeve with barely anything to fault. Clean with two pristine window circles, minimal traces of creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Still white with any discolouration minuscule, even on the flipback seam areas.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed – also of note – this is a superb clean pressing on pure vinyl, NOT recycled. Both playing surfaces have no mottle or dulling with the vinyl itself and sound quality is superbly clean accordingly. Dawn were not always this fine and most vinyl purists and specialist dealers will know this. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface traces minuscule and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors – an ultimate upgrade copy with the prized A1 / B1 mother and stamper codes as well.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very obscure and (being honest), very little-known album plays up to it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* or pressing noises. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this ultimate first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive, somewhat ‘lost’ Dawn record. It will prove immensely difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. Another elusive gem to please the vinyl connoisseurs seeking out the rarest available titles.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
