Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This lovely LP from French Columbia (FCX 781, French Pathe-Marconi pressing, blue/silver label, mono – no stereo edition exists*, dowel spine) features the Quatuor Hongrois (the Hungarian String Quartet) in magically evocative accounts of Claude Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor and Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major, both warmly recorded at the Scola Cantorum, Paris on 30 April 1958 and 7 May 1958, respectively.
At this time, the Hungarian String Quartet was composed of Zoltan Szekely (1st violin), Alexandre Moskowsky (2nd violin), Denes Koromzay (viola), and Gabor Magyar (cellist) – one of the finest quartets of the last century.
This French Columbia issue is arguably the finest release of these performances, coming in a heavy, textured “baguette”-style jacket with a dowel spine inner sleeve. And this copy is in fine condition. It is these type of pressings that reminds one what a work of art the LP once was and how much was lost in the transitions to later formats.
Incidentally, the striking cover design was executed by Atelier Joubert. There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket – in French only – by Robert Cushman.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the heavy “baguette”-style jacket is EXCELLENT++. Really, the only flaw concerns some discoloration to the front panel. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or other defects, and the jacket remains very solid, bright, and and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the dowel spine is EXCELLENT++. There are no seamsplits to the sleeve and the dowel remains solid, and the gold lettering along the spine perfectly legible – overall, an excellent collector’s copy.
Both sides of this disc have been carefully auditioned from beginning to end condition are graded conservatively as EXCELLENT++. There is occasional light surface noise, but nothing to diminish true listening pleasure. Only those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy need hesitate – overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
