Home Is Where I Belong
Quicksand
Dawn Records label. Cat. No. DNLS 3056
Matrices: DNLS 3056 A-1 ^ X DNLS 3056 B-1 ^ X
First pressing of this relatively rare Prog album that comes in a gatefold cover and a plain white paper inner. Apparently, first pressings of this record are translucent red when held up to the light, and I can confirm that this one is as such to a certain degree, although I generally find this sort of thing irrelevant and overrated.
The record has been cleaned on a Pro-ject VCS MKII cleaning machine with Pro-ject 'Wash It' cleaner and then placed in a new MFSL anti-static inner.
CONDITION
Examined under a strong halogen lamp, there is a scattering of light to medium scratches and sleeve withdrawal marks. The record also has a really great gloss. A visual grade of Good +
When played on a Pro-ject Debut III turntable (recently balanced tone arm and replaced stylus) the majority of side one plays VG+ with just very faint background crackle apart from the last track, which has louder crackle for the first minute and about 3 or 4 very quiet 'clicks'. The intro to this track is very quiet, which doesn't help, but looking at this part of the record under the lamp with a magnifying glass there is no apparent reason for this surface noise.
Side two generally has some sparse and quiet background crackle that becomes more obvious into tracks two and three that sometimes manifests itself as very quiet 'clicks', and then settles down into a quieter, but still noticeable, background crackle on the final two tracks. However, the music is never overwhelmed and comes through very strong, clear and very much to the fore. The record does not skip or stick.
A play-grade of Very Good but only just.
Both labels are clean and undamaged apart from spindle trails.
The cover has some ringwear, some creasing, a surface tear on the front, some very light 'soiling' on the back and some general wear to the edges and spine. However, the cover is fully intact with no splits or writing.

GRADING GUIDE - IMPORTANT!
I visually examine all records under a strong 35w halogen lamp, which shows up ALL defects.
I strictly grade my records according to the Rare Record Price Guide (RRPG) / Record Collector guidelines (with the addition of NM), which, to me, means as follows:
MINT- Must be sealed
NEAR MINT - Totally unmarked, no scratches, not even faint 'hairlines' / sleeve withdrawal marks or any other signs of having been played. I don't use this grade lightly. Whatever people say, such unmarked records DO exist but not nearly as many as others would have you believe with their NM grades.
EXCELLENT - No scratches, just signs of having been played, such as the odd faint 'hairline' sleeve withdrawal mark that is barely visible under a strong lamp.
VERY GOOD - The first mild scratches have begun to appear, but only very, very few.
GOOD - More scratches than Very Good and more severe, but I am confident that the record will play through without skips or sticking and will still provide a good listening experience.
FAIR - The record may not play through properly with a chance of it jumping and / or it will play with significant background noise.
POOR - It definitely won't play without skipping or sticking.
Below Near Mint I will use a plus or minus suffix with a grade to highlight fine differences.
COVER GRADES
I try to ensure that my cover grades are EXACTLY as stated in Record Collector magazine / RRPG. Therefore, if a cover is defaced, stained or torn it CANNOT grade better than FAIR. Likewise, if any part of the contents are missing it CANNOT grade better than POOR. However, if the fault is relatively minor and the rest of the cover is overwhelmingly of a certain grade then I will use this grade.
