RADISSON (1957 TV- CANADA) ( aka TOMAHAWK in U.S.A) - SUPER RARE 45 This may be the rarest of any TV od Film Theme Songs ever recorded and released in Canada. In more years of collecting soundtracks than I care to remember, this was the only copy of the single I ever came across. It is the title song written for a CBC TV series called "RADISSON" in Canada and renamed "TOMAHAWK" in the U.S.A. It ran for 39 weeks over 2 years, but the cost proved prohibitive (for that time) and it was dropped. No one would deny that it was an attempt to create for Canada the same kind of excitement that "DAVY CROCKETT" had done in the U.S.A. So sure was John Lucarotti (writer of the show) that they would have a hit,he licensed the name of the show and convinced the Toy manufacturers to issue a Radisson doll, a Radisson rifle, a Radisson music box and board game, a Radisson buckskin suit and t-shirts,and Radisson fur hats, which were alledged to actually be leftover Davy Crockett coonskin caps, with the tail pulled off and a white feather added. The title song was written by JOHNNY COWELL a successful Canadian song writer ("Walk Hand in Hand", "Our Winter Love" and "These Are The Young Years among many others) and musician and again, writer JOHN LUCAROTTA. (Cowell the music, Lucarotti the lyrics). Stage and TV singing star WALLY KOSTER was chosen to sing the song and recorded it on SPIRAL records for the Canadian market. It was arranged and conducted by yet another Canadian music icon, RUDY TOTH. JOHNNY COWELL wrote both words AND music for side 2, which may or may not have been associated with a series, though the title would imply that. It is called "The Man With The Bright Silver Badge". KOSTER is the singer. "RADISSON" was not the success that many hoped for, especially John Lucarotti. The merchandise connected with it, while no doubt very collectable today,was likely dumped at giveaway prices at every 5 & 10 cent store in the country. BUT..it is a piece of pop culture in Canada (historically based) and to a small degree in the U.S. as TOMAHAWK. This VERY RARE recording is likely all that remains of the series. The SPIRAL record number is S45-16 and other than a sticker on the label, it is in ALMOST MINT condition.
