Description

RAILROAD GIN

"Christmas Bowl Souvenir - Rock Masses For Brotherhood and Vision"

Original 7" 45rpm  EP, AWA Custom Recording label AW-33130, released 1973. Australian pressing. Blank white custom sleeve.

Apart from a couple of jingles and a demo recording of Ruby Tuesday , this custom recorded EP was apparently the first commercially available recording by RAILROAD GIN, the legendary 70's Brisbane rock band fronted by singer/songwriter Carol Lloyd. Their second single and major hit A Matter of Time was released in 1974 on the Polydor label.

Rock masses were happening around Australia during the early 70's (e.g. performed by Perth band Bakery) , and the 'Gin', besides their harder-edged rock material, wrote material to suit such events. One of the highlights of their career was a Rock Mass they performed with the Queensland Youth Orchestra at St.Johns Cathedral in Brisbane in 1973.

The rarely-encountered EP features Railroad Gin performing some of this Rock Mass material (without orchestra) and would be a welcome addition to any serious 'Gin' collection.

Good luck with your bidding!

TRACK LISTING:

Side A

  1. LORD HAVE MERCY  (Stone)
  2. POWER TO THE LORD  (Stone-Shields)

Side B

  1. LOVE IS YOU  (Jansons-Shields-Lloyd)
  2. RUBY TUESDAY (Jagger, arr. Stone)

CONDITION:

Record: VG . Although the quality of the pressing and mix could be better (probably due to the fact that it is a custom recording) this record plays really well with great dynamics. There are negligible sleeve scuffs to speak of on either side and the vinyl has excellent gloss and sheen looking almost unplayed. I would have rated the vinyl EX but have dropped it to a VG because of one small (1cm long) hairline surface scratch in the direction of the groove near the end of Track 1 (Side1) plus another about the same length but perpendicular to the groove beginning about halfway through Track 2 (Side2). Neither of these affect playability (no skips or jumps) however some minor low volume 'pops' are heard at these places on the record . Labels are very clean with a few pale brown ageing spots but no writing. No spindle marks.

Sleeve:  Blank white custom sleeve has about an inch long tear near the top right hand corner of one side which has been repaired by clear tape. Sleeve is clean without writing
