Biography
Ralph Lundsten is one of the pioneers of international electronic music with his own studio Andromeda. Recordings are done with his own home-built electronic instruments, some built in cooperation with the Finnish physicist Erkki Kurenniemi. Ralph Lundsten began making music by cutting tapes to his tape recorder and in that way he got sounds that no traditional instruments could give. In 1959, he built his studio Andromeda inside his wooden castle Frankenburg (originally built in 1878) in Boo, and he has kept it state of the art since.
People thought him to be a bit insane to make music in that way but he had some commercial success with the EP he released in 1964, which got airplay on French radio. Among his studio's more interesting instruments are the world's oldest sequencer and polyfony synth (Andromatic), another synth (Dimi-O) playable in the empty air in front of a camera and the playing visible through a display (Ralph says that Led Zeppelin was ready to steal it from him when they visited the studio) and a synth (The Love Machine) that is playable through the touch of other people's skins (and sensitive to mood and feelings).
He has released hundreds of albums with symphonies, ballets and other synthesizer-based tunes. Radio Sweden's international broadcast has used his tune "Ut i vida världen" (Out in the wide world) as its main musical theme. He has composed music for films, radio and TV programs.
As a short filmmaker he has won several major awards both in Sweden and abroad. When the United Nations had their 50th anniversary, Ralph's UN symphony "The Symphony of Joy" was the music played for the ceremony. Ralph Lundsten has declared castle Frankenburg as an embassy for the Andromeda galaxy, stating that there is no rule that a private citizen cannot represent a galaxy in the same way as a country.
Ralph Lundsten has in later years acted to make his home and studio into a public museum as a gift to the Swedish people. In 2003, the Swedish state stated that they could not economically afford it, but in 2005, it was publicly announced that the community of Nacka was interested in a cooperation with Lundsten to create what is now called Ralph Lundsten's Universe as a main attraction in the area. The plan is to complete the attraction with a building in the shape of a spaceship beside the castle Frankenburg and Andromeda studio. It will be a place to look at space, visit a cafe and restaurant, see movies and to compose music with computers.
