Salomea KRUSZELNICKA (KRUSCENISKI) (Poland 1873 – Lwow, 1952)
Kruszelnicka’s parents were Ukrainian and her father was a Russian Orthodox priest. She began as an amateur and choral singer and first sang as soloist, 1892, in Handel’s Messiah. This was followed by a period of study in Milano with Fausta Crespi, and she appeared in Cremona for the 1895-96 season, singing Manon Lescaut (Puccini) and Les Huguenots. Following several seasons in Russia, she returned to Italy in 1902 (as Krusceniski) and for a number of years had an extremely important career there, creating Madama Butterfly (the revised version) in Brescia, 1904, and appearing as both Salome (1907) and Electra (1909) in the respective La Scala premieres of these Strauss operas. Her repertoire included many Italian roles, such as Aida, Tosca, and Adriana Lecouvreur, as well as a full range of Wagner heroines (Including Brunnhilde).
She was also noted for her her physical beauty.
