RARE 1957 MILES DAVIS BANDSTAND USA FROM CAFE BOHEMIA 16" RADIO TRANSCRIPITON

Radio Show Transcription Disc produced by The Armed Forces Radio & Television Service.  One Complete 25 Minute Radio Program and One Complete 30 Minute Radio Program on this 16 inch, Vinyl, 33 1/3 rpm Disc.  This disc was issued to radio stations for broadcast only and not available to the general public, very rare!

“Bandstand USA” radio program #2 featuring music by Miles Davis & The Modern Jazz Quartet.  Announcer Guy Wallace states in the introduction that Bandstand USA is “the only live jazz show on radio today”.  The program begins with Miles Davis performing from The Café Bohemia in New York City.  The announcer introduces Miles Davis as “the controversial trumpet player that the whole country is listening to”.  Miles Davis performs two songs, beginning with “Bye Bye Blackbird” which ends during the beginning of an interview of Bill Coss (editor of Jazz Today & Metronome Magazines) by the announcer.  The interview begins while the song is in progress.   From the start of “Bye Bye Blackbird” to the moment the interview begins is 7:53.  The song ends during the interview and the total length of the song is 8:39.  The 2nd song begins while the interview is in progress.  The interview continues during the first 36 seconds of the song, and the total length of the 2nd song is 3:11

At this point the program switches locations to The Village Vanguard in New York City for a performance of The Modern Jazz Quartet who perform “D and E”, “One Never Knows”, “Confirmation” – the last song is cut off by the closing announcement for the radio program.    Total time is just over 30 minutes

The date on this side of the disc is November 8, 1957, however I suspect the actual date is July 27, 1957 as the details of this Miles Davis performance is identical to his performance of July 27, 1957 from The Café Bohemia where he played “Bye Bye Blackbird” and “Tune Up”, including an interview of Bill Coss.   It is possible that this “Bandstand USA” program is a rebroadcast of this performance, and the November 8, 1957 date on the disc is the date of the Bandstand USA broadcast, not of the original Miles Davis performance.  I don’t have any additional details on the Modern Jazz Quartet performance.

Side two of the disc features the radio program “Mystery Time” #50 from November 8, 1957 titled “I’ll Dance On Your  Grave” starring Lawson Zerbe & Athena Lord.  The announcer is Don Dowd.  25 minutes

This is a very rare Miles Davis Item.  Radio transcription discs were produced in far smaller quantities than LPs.  These transcription discs were typically destroyed or discarded by the radio station after use, so very few examples of this radio transcription have likely survived

Disc is in Very Good or better condition with Very Good to Excellent sound with light surface scratches.  There is wear on the labels which is visible in the scans.  The Bandstand USA program plays with no skips, there were two skips on the Mystery Time side of the disc, which may be overcome with a different stylus or a more thorough cleaning. 

  You may be waiting some time for a better example of this disc to come up for auction, especially given how radio transcriptions were used and handled by radio stations, not gently cared for like LPs in a personal collection
