SUBSTITUTE/WALTZ FOR A PIG (Atco #6409 PROMO 1st pressing, 1966):
VG+/M- 45 w/writing & company sleeve.
This VG+/M- 45 plays M- and is bargain-priced; it books at $100 in M-. You can see the green ring written on each label and the star stamped on the A-side in our photos. Its Atco company sleeve has a little white-out on it.
Substitute is the great lost Who single. If you question the "lost" designation, it's probably because you heard it on the Meaty Beaty Big And Bouncy greatest hits LP released in 1971. That was the first time the song was on an American album.
Even though this is arguably one of Townshend's best '60s tunes, and Atco released it as a U.S. single in 1966 and again in 1967, it didn't chart either time (it reached #5 in the UK).
The U.S. issue was the only Who song to be censored; the band was persuaded to change the line "I look all white but my dad was black" to "I try moving forward but my feet walk back". The change didn't help sales; it vanished without a trace and is one of the band's toughest U.S. 45s to find today.
