All throughout, there's some pretty good heavy rock on this album. A personal favourite is "Scar on My Memory", with the really odd fuzz-bass driven rhythm and slow, stoned fuzz and wah drenched guitar playing. "Little Amazon" also has that strange, slow, utterly stoned rhythm and melody...
Maximillian was formed by three N.Y. based musicians who adopted much of the power trio style and line-up (bass, guitar, drums) releasing this sole album in 1969. Led by guitarsit Mojack Maximillian and produced by songwriter Teddy Vann, they deliver a soul bluesy HENDRIX infected psych-rock, full of fuzz and wah-wah distorsions and effects.
So Maximillian was a New York-based African-American hard rock/psych trio, featuring the talents of singer Buzzy Bowzer (aka Maximillian), lead guitarist Mojack Maximillian, and bassist Moby Medina (aka Moby Maximillian). The band attracted the attention of producer/writer Teddy Vann who helped them score a contract with ABC. The result was 1969's Vann-produced "Maximillian". With Bowzer writing most of the eight tracks, the resulting album was filled with unbridled energy. So where to start? Bowzer's voice is raw and perfectly suitable for the heavy psychrock proceedings. Bellowing and powerful his performances evoked perhaps Eric Burdon at his most wasted. Bowzer had two singing styles - loud and louder. Forget the concept of subtlety on this one. Musically tracks like 'Scar On My Memory', 'The Road Rat' and 'The Name of the Game' offered up a mixture of raw incoherent psych jams. Lead guitarist Mojack was certainly talented, worshipping at the alter of Jimi Hendrix. The album frequently sounds like a series of stoned jam sessions cranking it up as loud as possible.
Vann also added to the album's production by giving the collection a harsh edge. It literally sounds like they'd recorded some of these tracks in the garage.
- The first time you hear 'Naked Ape' you may wonder if its a late-inning Eric Burden and the Animals album. Written by producer Vann, and opening up with screeching violins before morphing into kind of a bluesy piece, this one had the same stoned, late-1960s aura that Burden wallowed in. Bowzer shares Burden's bellowing, wail of a voice which.
Yeah, Bowzer's bellowing voice remains an acquired taste, and 'Kickin' 9 To 5' is a very decent slice of fuzz guitar-propelled rock. While 'Scar On My Memory' showcased one of those out-of-control jam sessions and if you're a big fuzz bass fan, you'll find Moby's performance entertaining. Similarly a big wah-wah guitar fan will appreciate Mojack's contributions to the song.
'The Road Rat' finds singer Bowzer and company doing their best to channel Hendrix.
The spoken intro is actually pretty funny, and then 'Little Amazon' dives head first into a cool conventional blues song.
The first minute of 'The Name of the Game' finds the band apparently trying different chord progressions, before launching into a conventional blues number with Bowzer's growling vocals on top. 'New Lover' is a strong heavy blues number, and Bowzer keeps his vocal excess to a minimal, while Mojack displays fine fretboard and Medina keeps the song bouncing along at a reasonable clip. CONDITION: The Cover: the thick gatefold cover is nearly impossible to find without shelf wear, it just did not wear well ...this cover is better than most copies even with a light bit of shelf (ring) wear ...we grade it VG+ and solid everywhere havin g no soft areas, no bends, no split seams, no writing...collectible
