RARE ... Original 1970 first pressing in eye-striking gold cover ... a formidable creative UK progressive rock band that made only this one album and features Mellotron!
Judas Jump was established in 1969 as a heavy progressive rock band. They used mellotron, winds and guitar in their sound, and secured a recording contract with Parlophone. Keyboard player Andy Bown, and drummer Henry Spinetti, had earlier worked with The Herd, along with Peter Frampton. After The Herd dissolved, Bown and Spinetti spent two years with Judas Jump. Judas Jump were the opening act on 26 August 1970 at the legendary British "Isle of Wight Festival." Their LP "Scorch" had the distinction of inaugurating Parlophone Records' new numbering sequence with the first release (PAS 10001). A trio of singles in 1969 and 1970 was followed by their rather eye-catching designed album - one that strangely didn't get a U.S. release until 1972, and even then it was a less interesting single-fold cover, and when the group was already splintering. JUDAS JUMP's music is on the bombastic side of progressive rock, and is actually more suited to being released on the progressive rock label 'Harvest Records.' 'John Brown's Body' opens the album with a likeable slice of blues-rock. That said, this wasn't your standard variety of Savoy Blues-styled English blues-rock, rather features a surprisingly up-tempo and cutting edge - imagine Steve Winwood and Traffic having a couple of beers and actually enjoying themselves while performing a blues song. Another one of the album's most catchy endeavors, 'Rockin Chair' has a nice melody and showcases the band's unexpectedly tight vocal harmonies. A taunt rocker, 'Beer Drinkin' Woman' is almost as good as the title. Easy to see why this one was issued as a single. Kicked along by Bown's barrelhouse keys, other than some drunken harmony vocals singing/slurring the title track over and over, there isn't a great deal to '49 Fingers'. However, 'Purple God' makes it clear these guys had an edge for succsess. With one of those melodies that buries itself in your head it is hard to figure out why Parlophone didn't release it as a single. 'Bossa Jump' has a breezy melody (perhaps the album's most captivating melody), complete with lots of strumming guitars, and another sing-along chorus - the main lyric being the refrain "don't cut my hair, or my brains will fall out". Hard not to like that type of in-depth social commentary. Side two starts out with one of the album's stranger efforts. An acoustic ballad bathed in a 'hippie vibe', 'Cry-De-Cry' sounds like an outtake from a mid-1960s full of pretty harmony vocals, and it doesn't sound like the rest of the album. The mid-tempo rocker 'Run For Your Life' sounds like a cool Thunderclap Newman track. We have no idea if it was intentional, but singer/guitarist Williams nails Newman's vocal style on this one. 'Cully' is the album's most straightforward rocker and one of the set's highlights. Williams' slide guitar steals the show on this one. For better or worse every early-1970s UK band seems to have felt obligated to include at least one rural flavored number - Judas Jump's contribution to the genre is 'Mississippi Turnpike'. Showcasing Bown's keyboards, 'Primrose Lady' features a pretty melody. Nice, and the song has a weird, echoy production sound - the track literally sounds like it had been recorded in a shower stall, which is an interesting effect... 'Scorch', the track is actually one of the album''s most impressive performances - Andy Bown's Hammond B3 and Williams fuzz guitar certainly makes it an album highlight.Side 1
