This historic 1939 recording of the haunting song "Strange Fruit" by the iconic singer, Billie Holiday is perhaps one of the most important recordings of the era. After Billie's label, Capitol Records refused to release it, a small label called Commodore Records released it and it eventually sold 1 million copies.
Billie was banned of performing it, because of the tragic subject matter of the lynching of African Americans. She was arrested for performing it. Commodore Records, was owned by comedian, Billy Crystal's father. Located on 52nd St. in New York City. Billy has told the story that Billie Holiday used to babysit him, and took him to see his first movie.
This is a very old 78 vinyl record which is playable, but you will hear the crackle of a record of this age. The record may have some wear and tear due to age, but it still plays well and is a great addition to any vinyl collection. Personally I enjoy it, as I listen back through time to this historic recording.
