Description
Original MONO EP set by THE BEATLES: Magical Mystery Tour (EMI MMT-1, 1967, 2 EP set with cover: M- records and cover).
Magical Mystery Tour/Your Mother Should Know/I Am The Walrus/Fool On The Hill/Flying/Blue Jay Way: Magical Mystery Tour, a film which aired on UK TV at Christmastime 1967, was Paul's bright idea, and the other Beatles reluctantly agreed to do it ("OK, let's do the f***er"). Their hesitation seemed justified when the (figuratively and literally unfocused) saga drew catcalls and brickbats thrown from every direction. The music, though, got more positive reception in the UK and around the world. This EP set was the original release of these songs; the U.S. LP added several 1967 hit singles to make up side 2.
For those of you who have only heard the stereo version of Magical Mystery Tour: there's a significantly different sound to the mono mix that a listen will reveal. The Beatles and producer George Martin habitually mixed to mono, at least in part because that's how people would hear songs on AM radio. It's fun to listen to mono versions of music that we've heard in stereo for most of our lives, and realize: this is how The Beatles intended their music to sound! Ironically, it was the Fab Four themselves who helped kill mono forever. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was an album that you "had to" hear in stereo; it set a new standard that sounded the death knell for mono recordings (and since everybody bought stereo, both Sgt. and MMTour in mono are very rare). In the '70s, album-oriented rock FM radio buried mono for good; record companies released everything in stereo from then on.
Check listings for these Magical Mystery Tour EPs and you'll see that sellers routinely ask $100 (or more) for this scarce collector's item in mono. This is the original 1967 pressing, with the lavender lyric sheets in the middle of the booklet, and the original "wavy top" record sleeves on both 45s. We'll open this auction at a low bid, without reserve; or you can buy-it-now if you don't want to compete with other collectors. Once somebody bids, the buy-it-now option goes away.
Both EPs are clean M- examples without any writing whatsoever, and the cover is M- as well, with a beautiful, intact booklet. We combine shipping for multiple-lot winners, and unconditionally guarantee every record we sell; if you're not happy, return it for a refund. Nobody's returned anything yet!
