Description
APG CREW "on the rise" RARE BAY AREA RAP FROM 1989: Cassette. perfect condition. Shrink-wrapped and perfectly preserved since its release almost 20 years ago in 1989 by North Oakland's APG Crew on their tiny indie Metro label. Long out of print. NOTE: if you do an eBay search of "APG Crew On The Rise" you will get one result - an ebay store in Frisco that claims that this was a cassette-only release (incorrect: it was a vinyl full-length also that spawned a single of the album's lead off killer track "Action Packed Gangstas"). This same seller is selling a used copy of this same cassette for a Buy It Now price of $199.99 (YIKES! - that's a lot of skrilla to ask and a lot more than you should pay here for a shrink-wrapped, never opened or played PERFECT condition copy of the same cassette. And if you dont win on this auction - fear not I have more to post on ebay laterz). But what about the music and the artists? First up APG crew (a collective from North Oakland - aka "da North Pole" who won "best new rap act of the Bay" in 1989) got their name from two places: APG as in Action Packed Gangstas and APG as in the first three letters of the street in North Oakland that several lived on - Apgar Street. Secondly the music is bumping: even though it was an early example of so-called Bay gangsta rap (even predating Richie Rich's 415) it was not the stereotypical 'street sound' of later years. It contained lots of unadulterated pure hip-hop breaks based beats, som sick samples, plus DJ scratching (courtesy of J Cutt and Turntable Tee - aka Taj Theilman who currently engineers with Too $hort and is executive producer of The Pack on $hort's UpAllNite imprint). It was a good album and better than their sophomore release which came out on a Texas label a couple of years or so later. One of the main emcees Mello Mar (real name Marlon Blackwell) recently (early 2007) made a solo comeback. Best tracks on "On The Rise" include the aforementioned "Action Packed Gangstas," "Listen to me Brother," "Seek and Destroy," and "Action Speaks." - Billy Jam (TheRealHipHopSlam ebayer) May 2007
