very rare and wonderful compilation of 60s and 70s cambodian pop music featuring the legendary singers sinn sisamouth, ros sereysothea, and pen ran. released on the angkor label, these appear to date from the mid to late 70s.
i'm not entirely sure of the story with these LPs, i think they may have been pressed for cambodian refugee communities and distributed covertly during the rule of the khmer rouge, when music was banned and musicians were summarily executed. very rare in any case, never seen or heard of these records in 15 years of collecting international and southeast asian music. they are very interesting pieces of history, and of course the music is absolutely incredible. it ranges from fuzzed out rockers, to languid and nostalgic love paeans, to more traditional takes on folk and ceremonial music. i'm offering a handful of LPs in this series this week, so please be sure to check my other auctions.
