Matrix numbers written on run out of IRSM correspond directly to matrix numbers on corresponding Okeh titles for October 1923 Chicago recording sessions, except for added a's and b's to matrices on IRSM recording discs. A's and b's could indicate takes?
IRSM stands for Irving Ravinsky and Sam Meltzer. Meltzer was a baker at night and ran a record business in Brooklyn during the day. He put a small ad in "The Record Changer" magazine in January 1946 or 47 announcing reissues of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band from 1923. These were sold by mail order and they were immediately sold out. These reissues were in fact bootleg dubs of the Okeh 1923 recordings. This first offering had white labels and consisted of three King Oliver sessions (IRSM -1,-2,-3. Further reissues of various jazz recordings (over 100) were offered in various colored labels into the early 50's. Tight crack in run in before start is difficult to photograph. Last two pics. Perhaps stabilize with a tiny bit of super glue.
The present offering is an acoustical recording, and the sound is just "OK" -a few years before electronic recording. Test pressing?, first issue?, personal copy? I can't say.
A rare and unusual "The Hot Jazz Club of America" collectible. Bid now!
