RARE JIMI HENDRIX 45:
HEY JOE/STONE FREE (Experience Hendrix 1007 #EH-1/2 limited edition red vinyl 1st pressing with TITLE SLEEVE, 1998): UNPLAYED MINT.
Reissue of the Experience's first single, released in the UK in late 1966. Hey Joe, written by Billy Roberts, was first recorded by Tim Rose; his was the version that Jimi heard in England. In the U.S., it was a Top 40 hit for The Leaves in the summer of '66. It was also recorded by The Byrds, although they didn't put it on a single.
Jimi wanted to put Land Of 1000 Dances on the flip, but manager (and former Animals bassist) Chas Chandler told him they'd make more publishing money if he put an original tune on the B-side, so Jimi wrote Stone Free.
This limited edition 45 was issued in the numbered Jimi Hendrix Classic Singles Collection in 1998, and is otherwise unavailable. The ten singles weren't individually numbered on the labels; we take the numbers from the trail-out matrix. They're small-hole 45s; the yellow "insert" you see in the center is, in reality, printed onto the label! This record is fully authorized by Jimi's family; it's not a fake or repro, and is UNPLAYED MINT. The box set that included this 45 has been out of print for 17 years...
