Description
For your consideration - an original 1981 pressing of a seminal punk/gothic record: Joy Division - Still.
This is a super-rare example of the Limited-Edition, original gatefold 2-record album set within a matching, fabric-wrapped hardcover binder and bound with white silk ribbon.
This fetish object really shows off Peter Saville’s graphic design skill and is a true posthumous tribute to Ian Curtis and Joy Division.
Running a hand over the elegant textures of the hard-bound fabric cover and silk ribbon combined with the white silk-screened text and logos make for a sensual and funereal experience.
Each vinyl record is set within a heavy flecked grey cardboard sleave (whose surface is soft and textured like fine watercolor paper). These two sleaves slide in and out of the matching gatefold outer sleave which is imprinted in white ink with the F Factory symbol, “JOY DIVISION”, “STILL”, song names and liner notes.
There is a true pleasure in unwrapping this historic archive of rare songs from twenty-five years ago. Feeling the heft of the folio and contemplating its multi-layered packaging makes listening to the songs even more powerful. This is how all great albums should be produced - like the fine pieces of art that they are.
I have owned this record since 1982 and only played it once to record to tape.
This compilation album consisting of rare songs, previously unused studio material along with a recording of their last ever performance which took place at High Hall Birmingham University on May 2, 1980. The performance includes the only time the group ever performed the song "Ceremony", which later became a New Order single. Also featured is a cover of The Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray", recorded at The Moonlight Club in London on April 3, 1980.
