one of a kind super rare historic recording

78 r.p.m. acetate, recorded at ACA studios, Houston, Texas in 1958, possibly 1957

CONDITION: Good minus with lots of marks/scuffs, the thick vinyl definitely has a history. This is a one-sided, mono, 78 rpm recording. there are actually 4 holes drilled in label area with three blocked by the label. the word "ALLIED" is etched twice in the back with NEW YORK and USA, all around the center hole. (see scan). While creating a digital copy* of this, I did play this on an audiophile bud's turntable (just one time) and it played thru and recorded without skips.

THE SONG: This is a mid-tempo ballad. more teen idol than doo-wop, since there are no harmonies. he is accompanied by a simple combo of piano, sax, bass and drums. i do not know the identities of the musicians. There is no writer credit. The only other "I Cried My Heart Out" is by the doo-wop group Jackie & The Starlites but is not the same song.

COMMENTS: I researched this as best I could with as many resources as I could. After Rogers was in The Scholars, a doo-wop group who issued their last single in 1957, he went thru his first solo stint before joining the Bobby Doyle Trio. During this brief period is when I believe this acetate was recorded. He did record and issue "That Crazy Feeling" as a single in 1958, on Carlton, originally under the name "Kenneth" Rogers. It was reissued along with another Carlton single under the name "Kenny" Rogers, later in 1958. My gut feeling is that "I Cried My Heart Out" was recorded just BEFORE or possibly during the sessions for the Carlton singles due to the "Kenneth" Rogers name on both labels. It also has more of a mid-50s sound. This song was never issued as a single and Rogers has never recorded a version of this song. Love him or not, Rogers was and still is, one of the most successful artists in American music. Needless to say, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire a very rare pressing. For this historic, one-of-a-kind piece of musical history, there is a reasonable but low minimum bid. there is no reserve. I hope it finds a very good home for a loyal fan or collector.
