• I am liquidating many of my records (LPs, EPs, 45s), electronic equipment, and miscellaneous items to create space for a new laboratory (visit cochlearconcepts.com for details regarding my research).

• I pack items with great care. Vinyl records generally ship via Media Mail (USA) or First Class (International customers) in PREMIUM grade cartons.
• IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING!! The USPS's weight limit for International First-Class mail is 4 lbs. (approx. 1.8 kg). I will gladly combine shipping, but parcels weighing more than 4 lbs (6 LPs) will have to be split into smaller parcels or shipped via Priority Mail. I will ship whichever method is less expensive. READ READ READ before bidding. Most sellers (understandably) rate vinyl records based on visual inspection. Assessing record distortion and playability requires careful listening; this, as one can imagine, is very time-consuming. I listen to all records that I have for sale (this gives me one last chance to hear them). My grading system is based on AUDIBLE as well as visual defects. Surface marks on a record may be visible; yet, the record may sound quite good and relatively scratch-free. Conversely, I have opened sealed records only to discover that improper storage resulted in distortion (of an audible nature) that is different from wear or scratches. Furthermore, a record may be scratch free, but if it was played on a record player with a worn stylus, groove distortion will be noticeable, particularly when listening to vocals or loud passages. My grading system is based on the following parameters: Surface marks and blemishes (visual); groove wear (audible); annoying pops (audible); scratches (audible); surface noise other than scratches (audible); skips or really loud pops (audible). I won't sell a record that skips or would damage a delicate stylus. Grading a record's sleeve (or jacket or cover) is solely visual. The photos I take give a realistic indication of a sleeve's overall appearance. Breaking all of this down results in the following grading system, henceforth referred to as the ELC Audio Engineering™ / ELC Grading System. Note: Samples* below and the ELC Grading System cannot be used without permission:

*The above examples of record damage are from some of my favorite records. The damage is in no way a reflection of my attitude toward the artists or record companies--mint copies of these records are hard to find! I won't sell a record with severe damage, loud pops, skips, or any deformity that could result in stylus damage.

     Surface marks and blemishes: NM, some signs of cleaning and having been handled (gently).
     Groove wear: Minimal. Record only played on quality equipment.
     Pops: None.
     Scratches: Discernible noise on lead-in groove (typical of many excellent and "near mint" records).
     Surface noise other than scratches: No signs of defects. Note that this is a lower-fidelity recording (intended), not a mega-fidelity, overproduced, digital recording.
     Record sleeve: Minimal wear, but not mint (see photos).

This listing is for rare, limited (1000) vinyl pressing of THE HENTCHMEN: HENTCH-FORTH with JACK WHITE 45 RPM EP record (1998 David Italy Records, Detroit, MI). This garage-rock record is in near mint (NM) condition, but it has been played a dozen or so times. So that there's no mistake as to the condition of this 12-inch 45 rpm EP / mini LP, I have provided listening samples (below). The samples are examples of "worst-case" groove distortion, surface noise, and crackles. The cover is in NM condition, too... RECORD BUYERS: Please read the following regarding the sale of vinyl records.

I do NOT use the "Gold Mine" record-grading guidelines. Below are are five reasons why:

1. I've purchased records graded as "near mint" that I would have personally rated as "very good." Obviously, then, there's a subjective component when it comes to physical condition or record noise. Although condition is a judgment call, I try to be accurate.
2. I rate the condition of a phono record and its cover separately. A worn cover is one thing, a worn record is another. In some instances, the cover is more valuable to collectors than the album; in other instances, the record's sound is paramount.
3. It's difficult to judge a record's quality when the master sources were vinyl records or deteriorated tape: The sound of scratches and pops may be intrinsic to a record because they were already on the master source. This situation applies to a lot of the Sixties garage rock compilations I have to offer. Even a brand new record will have pops or noise if there were pops or noise on the original source. I suppose this point is obvious, but...
4. Even a brand-new, sealed record can present with surface noise and defects because of age, improper storage, or for reasons that defy logic. On rare occasions, a record that looks (or is) brand new can have audible defects. I generally LISTEN to the records I sell so that you know what to expect.
5. I use high-end (audiophile) record playing equipment--refer to photo above. If a record skips or can't be played on my equipment, it goes out with the trash. Please know, however, I am NOT the original owner of many records in my collection; consequently, I'm unable to give detailed information such as how many times the album was played, what stylus or tracking force was used, etc. The best I can do is state whether the record has audible scratches, groove wear, or noises that wouldn't ordinarily exist on a new record.
