THE ROWDIES
A.C.A.B. / Negative Malfunction / Free Zone
LABEL: Birds Nest Records. BN 109. No date, but sure is 1978.
FORMAT: 45rpm. 7" black vinyl. Black/white picture sleeve.
CONDITION: IMPORTANT: please note that I dont currently have a functioning record player, subsequently haven't been able to test-play the item. All discription therefore is purely visual. And visually, seems to be in pretty damn fine condition for a record that's nearly 30 years old. No apparent scratches of any consequence. Sleeve in reasonable condition, though not mint.
The band came from Evesham, Worcs, probably the earliest Punk band from that area. Based around brothers Rob and Al Emms, guitar/songwriting and vocals respectively.
The label, Birds Nest Records, of Kempsey, Worcs, was I think a label attached to the recording studio where these tracks were layed down.
Pretty sure this was released in 1978, though might even have been late 1977.
The band laid down around a dozen tracks - I once had a cassette copy, now sadly disintergrated ! - which would have to qualify as one of the great lost Punk albums. Are the master tapes still in existence ? Would make a great CD - better late than never !
Three members - the brothers Emms and bassist Kevin Ellison - later resurfaced in early 1980s Punk band SPOILS OF WAR, another fine band. They did a four-track demo, got coverage in Sounds...but were never picked up by any label.
Al Emms was later frontman with THE CHOIRBOYS, who supported the UK SUBS, and released a cassette EP on my own label ! Whatever happened to the tapes ? Having moved house a few times since then, they could be anywhere.
Rob Emms, always a strong songwriter in a number of genres, had several bands, but I dont think anything was ever generally released.
Now.. if we could just find those master tapes... there'd be a great box set in it. Meanwhile, this is probably your only chance to experience this excellent blast from the punk past.
