This rare Columbia special album came from the private collection of a national entertainment correspondent. Johnny Mathis signed the cover during one of their interviews in his Hollywood Hills home.
"Merry Christmas" was Johnny Mathis's first Christmas album, released by Columbia Records in October 1958. Despite several later Christmas albums, this remains his best-selling seasonal effort and a beloved classic. At more than 5 million copies sold, it ranks as one of the best-selling Christmas albums ever and was reissued in 2018.
The album features a mix of traditional Christmas carols, such as "Silent Night" and "O Holy Night", and holiday hits like "White Christmas" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas".
"Merry Christmas" debuted on Billboard's 25 Best-Selling Pop LPs in December 1958 and got as high as number three during its initial four-week run. It continued to appear there every holiday season for the next four years and was on Billboard's Christmas Albums and Pop Catalog Albums charts in subsequent years. In December 1960 it received Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of 500,000 copies in the US.
Four songs from the album – "Winter Wonderland", "Blue Christmas", "White Christmas", and "Sleigh Ride" – were also released on the EP "Merry Christmas, Vol. 1", which reached number two on the charts during the 1958 holiday season.
