This collection of 35 choice 1960s “Deep Soul” tracks from the vaults of Atlantic, Atco, Warner Bros. and LOMA Records is unique in that it focuses on quality performances without much consideration of chart success. Not to say that this 3LP set doesn’t include heavy hitters such as Redding, Pickett, Sledge and Burke. But their contributions here tend to focus on some of the forgotten or overlooked tracks they recorded for these labels. Many of the artists included here cut only a handful of sides at a point in Atlantic’s history when the label conglomerate was having a lot of financial success with hits by Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and Solomon Burke to name just a few. This afforded Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler the opportunity to sign and record a wider plethora of Southern Soul artists as they cut deals with Volt, Stax and Fame Studios. Names such as Dee Dee Sharp, Alvin Robinson, Carl Hall, Paul Kelly, Bobby Sheen and J.J. Jackson may be familiar only to hardened Deep Soul collectors, but their contributions here are just as stirring, virile, gritty and explosive as the tracks by the recognizable Soul heroes on this collection.    Many of these original 45 singles are very obscure, costly and hard to obtain. Without the advantage of a hit at radio, many of the tracks were pressed in limited quantities and forgotten over time. After the decline of disco and funk in the early 80s, Soul music became less raw and more slickly produced. Gone were the punchy horns, pumping organ licks, stinging guitar riffs and rubbery bass lines. The genre sounded less and less like the original rhythm and blues style that Atlantic Records helped pioneer in the late 50s that would eventually help to spawn pure Soul in the 60s. While we don’t want to rob anybody of the joys of crate digging for these artifacts, we thought we would save time and possibly some scratch by assembling a stellar collection of the deepest Southern Soul tracks from the Atlantic, Atco, WB & LOMA vaults – gems that epitomized the golden era of the genre in the 1960s.
