ON THE GALLLO NEW SOUND LABEL AND STILL IN IT'S ORIGINAL COVER

Spokes Mashiyane was a major figure in the development of Kwela and Township South African music, first on the penny whistle and later branching out onto other instruments such as the saxophone (as in this case).
He died in 1972 at the tragically young age of 39 having already achieved international recognition with overseas performance such as his appearance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival (the one where Dylan got booed!)
In South Africa Spokes became a major star and after only receiving a flat fee from Trutone his first recording company he left to join Gallo and under a deal brokered by Union Artists, Mashiyane became the first black musician in South Africa to receive royalties from his recordings.
Gallo’s New Sound label, with whom Mashiyane was recording, donned their record sleeves with his image and a listing advertising his other recordings.
