Surprise surprise - one of the best "British Invasion" albums of 1964. Very impressed by the general sound, hot tempos and production. Excellent well recorded drums. Richly varied instrumentation with piano, organ, vibraphone, harmonica and flute. Weaknesses - the electric guitar is often off key and poor and Paul Jones’ gauche vocals. Side one is scorching, on a par with the Stones and vastly ahead of the Yardbirds. One of the best blues-oriented British Invasion albums is the Five Faces of Manfred Mann, the mono versions of the songs, "Sack O' Woe," "I'm Your Kingpin," "Mr. Anello," and "What You Gonna Do" apparently only exist in mono. Between the mono and stereo versions, each song has a radically different mix and feel, and while the mono version is preferable on overall musical terms, it's also fascinating to hear the instruments and voices in sharper punchy production in the MONO versions, especially in the clarity available here, which practically puts you in the bell of Mike Vickers' jams and brings out his and Tom McGuinness's guitar better than you ever heard them before (check out "Hubble Bubble").
