Description
This is a beautiful copy of a single by The Nylons: "Maid 'N Japan" b/w "Maid 'N Japan" (Downey 109). Released in 1963. Several members of this band (not to be confused with the 1980s singing group) also recorded under the name The Rumblers, who were best known for their surf single, also on Downey Records, called "Boss" b/w "I Don't Need You No More." Band members include Greg Crowner, Mike Kelishes, Rex Delong, Wayne Matteson, and Bob Jones. "Maid 'N Japan" is cool instrumental written by Kelishes and Matteson.
One side has an "I" written in thick black marker. The other side has a stamp in red ink that reads "Thanks from George Jay." Music historians, especially those with an interest in early rock and the Southern California music business, know that George Jay was a former DJ turned promo man. He had a close relationship with Era and Dore records and helped make many of their singles hits, including the Phil Spector smash, "To Know Him is to Love Him" by The Teddy Bears. No doubt this particular single came through the office of George Jay, and very likely his desk. What's odd is that it appears to be a promo copy (which would make sense) but the label does not say so (although it is white, and Downey stock copies are blue). Anyway, the B side is supposed to be "Gospel Truth."
This is a very nice copy. Apart from the writing and the stamp, the labels are clean with no stickers or tears. Vinyl has nice gloss and plays very well through minor surface noise. Overall, VG+ to EX condition.
