Description
For sale is an authentic, extremely rare mispress of the Beatles' 1967 masterwork "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in Stereo on Capitol Records SMAS-2653, widely considered to be Rock 'n' Roll's first fully-realized concept album. (I personally disagree and consider this distinction belonging to the Beach Boy's "Pet Sounds" from a year earlier, an exceptional nearly NM 1st Mono press of which I also have for sale.) This particular copy contains an error from a defective W9 stamper which caused the backing vocals and horns to be absent from "Good Morning". Most sources agree there are less than 800 of these in existence, and they are very aggressively sought by collectors. Though they do turn up from time to time, you'll never see a disc so close to Mint condition as this one.

DESCRIPTION
Vinyl is NM- (Near Mint Minus), extremely clean, deep gloss, stunning dark shine. No scratches or visible marks anywhere other than faint wisps of superficial blemishes from the original paper sleeve (currently stored outside cover in new poly-lined inner). Playback is clean and rich (listen below) with barely any trace of background static. Remarkable for a disc that turns 50 in June! Both labels are pristine, as if it had never been played before I made the recordings, no spindle marks. Has "Subsidiary" text around bottom, so this is an early 1968 press, like all copies with this error.
Cover is VG++, rich colors, strong seams and corners, fully legible spine (see pic), no visible ring wear on front. Only a few small factors prevent a NM rating: very light contact wear on rear, some mild cracking of finish along top near spine (rest of top and all bottom seams are tight like new), two linear impressions on front (not visible in pics), and a small 1" crack along inside gatefold hinge. Otherwise, this gem is perfect, no splits, stains, stickers, creases, or writing. Others might label this as EX+ (including eBay), but I use the Goldmine Standard which does not include the EX grade. So VG++, just shy of NM- it is. Cut-out insert is Mint, no damage. This version did not include an original inner sleeve.
