In February of 1997, the final radio station in Gene Autry’s Golden West Broadcasters was sold. After the sale, the station went from LA’s Finest Rock to La Nueva 101.9, and I was out of a job.



Thankfully, I was quickly offered the job of Rock Music Director at the radio/music industry trade publication The Album Network. At my very first music meeting there, someone played the song “Sixteen Days” from Whiskeytown’s then-new album Strangers Almanac and I knew I was hearing something special. That album quickly rose to the top of my listening list, and I became a huge Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams fan.




At that time, Ryan Adams was in prime self-destructive mode! I had no idea what to expect the first time I saw them play live. It was at a tiny LA club called The Mint, and the show was as great as I’d hoped. Of course, Ryan Adams was slightly sloshed, but we experienced none of his infamous meltdowns on stage. I stuck around after the show, hoping to say hello.




I was a bit surprised to find him just hanging out at the bar. I said hello, and struck up a conversation – the first of what would be many over the next few years, as I was fortunate enough to interview him numerous times. (keep reading) As our conversation was winding down, Ryan went over to the merch table and picked up a copy of this 4 songs in a limited edition (only 2000 printed) gatefold sleeved 2 record EP, and gave it to me!



My only regret is that I didn’t ask him to autograph it!
