Evolution, UK, 1970
Z1006
INCREDIBLE HEAVY prog album from this obscure five piece. The album met with little fanfare and sank without trace on release - a pity as its a gorgeous blend of crushing heavy prog and head spinning psych kitted out with ripping lead guitar work and brilliantly effective Hammond Organ. Similar style to monster prog beasts such as Red Dirt, Human Beast, Norman Haines Band and Atomic Rooster. The songs are tremendous and the arrangements are exceptionally professional and well executed. One of the best early seventies prog obscurities.
Pressing: Evolution, UK, 1970
Vinyl: Glossy and shiny surface - hardly any surface scuffs or needle drags. No spindle marks but the record suffers from what can be described as a mottled heat warp - visible in strong sunlight. I won't lie as the effect is pronounced and causes a whoosh sound but my Technics SL-120 turntable handles the record very well - no jumps and only minor groove distortion. Playback is solid and the crushing heavy prog means the music is brilliantly in focus. If it were a folk album then we'd be talking a very different story here. This has been my very serviceable keeper copy for 10 years but I won't describe the condition as anything more than Vg+
Cover: Signs of use but nothing horrendous. Issued in a beautifully designed front laminated cover - retains nice gloss. Sharp corners (slightly rubbed), no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and one light corner crease. Slight edge wear right side - obviously the record had been badly stored at one point causing a little crease effect to the leading edge. Spine is stiff, square, uncrushed with original pinches top and bottom. Rear panel is an unlaminated flip back design and displays light storage wear - again nothing horrendous and no ring wear. Glue residue running along the very bottom flip back. Again, I'd grade this as a very strong Vg+
