DOROTHY and RAYMOND
Raymond Scott was a master at making music that was quirky, evocative, and just plain fun. His tight arrangements led to many a musician pulling out their hair just trying to get it right. They were pretty complicated stuff. When the soundtrack was being put together for Warner Bros. cartoons under the heading of Merrie Melodies or Looney Tunes, the music of Raymond Scott was chosen.
The recordings of the Raymond Scott Quintet are quirky, and visually evocative. That's why they lent themselves so well to being used as cartoon soundtracks. They even turned up on a regular basis on the eclectic Ren & Stimpy cartoon show. This is simply great, fun music. If you like Carl Stalling, you've got to check out Raymond Scott.
By the time that the 1950s rolled around, Raymond was recording not only for himself, but also providing the expert backing for his singer-wife Dorothy Collins. She was one of the vocalists on the Your Hit Parade television show.
Note that the first track on this Lp is the rare track that was previously available only as a Children’s 78rpm. It bears the odd title : Dedicatory Peice To The Crew And Passengers Of The First Experimental Rocket Express To The Moon.”
This was reelased in April 1957 and Billboard reviewed it with: ‘Raymond Scott has gotten together some far-out instrumentals reminiscent of the maestro’s late ‘30s quintet offerings. Miss (Dorothy) Collins breaks this mood with occasional tasty offerings like “Dinah,” “Singin’ In The Rain” and “Song Of India,” thou actually, the lady has little exposure here. It’s practically all Scott and group, and for those who like something very different even in this day of emphasis on new sounds, an interesting potion.”
