Description
HECTOR BERLIOZ -
Symphonie Fantastique
Charles Munch/Boston Symphony Orchestra
RCA GCSD-6
2-Track Stereo for “Displaced" or “Staggered” heads
7 1/2 ips; 7-inch reel; includes notes insert
Please note: for proper balances on playback, all 2-track tapes must be played on a 2-track machine. Playback on a 4-track machine will not give even weight to the channels and may not be satisfactory.
Note further: since this tape has been reproduced for staggered heads, it will not play properly on a regular stacked-heads machine. This very scarce issue is for truly esoteric collectors who have managed to acquire (and keep in service!) a rare staggered-head tape deck, probably not manufactured since the 1950’s!
Recorded in Symphony Hall, Boston
November 14 & 15, 1954
Richard Mohr & John Pfeiffer, producers
John Crawford, engineer
This recording was originally issued on LP in mono only in 1955 on LM-1900 - the first of the two recordings of the work which Munch made in Boston, not to be confused with their remake in 1962 (which was on 4-track tape, but never 2-track).
This was also the first stereo recording the BSO made of a complete work. A stereo issue on LP was announced in 1960, but never actually released, so this 2-track tape (listed as early as the January/March 1956 Harrison Tape Catalog) was the only stereo issue of this recording until the British Victrola LP issue in 1971. There was no stereo LP issue in the U.S. until the Gold Seal LP release in 1980!!
The tape is in excellent condition except it is missing the first couple of seconds at the beginning; its box shows only minor shelf wear and a couple of tiny seam splits.
