RCA LSC 2449 GOUNOD / BIZET, Faust Ballet Music / Carmen Suite, Alexander Gibson, Royal Opera House Orchestra, Covent Garden (1960) original Shaded Dog 1s/1s (I) A1/A5 pressing.
This is the original 1s/1s pressing – it is NOT a reissue. It is one of the rarest of all the RCA living stereo shaded dogs, and the sound and ambience are spectacular. The Carmen (side 2) has been on Harry Pearson’s list of superdisks for many years and deservedly so – it has a very wide and deep soundstage with huge dynamics. This is my own personal copy, and the vinyl surfaces are clean and glossy, but with a few light scuff marks that DO sound as noted below. PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a perfect copy, but it plays very well. The vinyl grading ranges from VG+ to NM. I would estimate that about 80% of the vinyl plays near mint. Where there are defects, they do not (in my opinion) detract from the enjoyment of the music or the performance. A detailed description of the defects on each side is as follows:
Side 1: minor scuff marks - plays near mint EXCEPT for a very soft repeating tic that lasts for about one minute. There are also a few single light tics toward the end of the side. The label is clean with no spindle marks.
Side 2: minor scuff marks - plays near mint EXCEPT for one moderately loud pop and about 15 moderate repeating tics. The label is clean with no spindle marks.
Jacket: The jacket is clean and in excellent condition EXCEPT for a 2 inch section of clear taping on the top right seam (see photo). The spine has some very minor splitting, but the writing is still very readable.
In summary, this is NOT a perfect copy, but it is a very nice copy of this highly sought after golden age recording.
