REBECCA & THE SUNNY BROOK FARMERS "BIRTH" LP

COVER IN GOOD/VG shape, ringwear, spine is 2/3 split, top edge 1/5 split

VINYL is super clean, no marks, plays real nice EXCELLENT with a few scattered pops here and there.

VERY RARE album – the sole LP by Rebecca and the Sunnybrook Farmers, “Birth”, on the Musicor label, from 1969.  Not sure there are any “farmers” in the band, although one of the guys looks just like Phil May of the Pretty Things, nor is there even a Rebecca (there are THREE girls in the band, however, two Ilenes and one Ki-Ki, how cute is that?).  And if the name of the band implies some sort of rural laid-back sunshine pop, rest assured that Rebecca and the Sunnybrook farmers are NOT so laid-back, and if anything, the three lead female singers sound like they’re more inspired by the Hitchcock film “Rebecca” than any children’s story.  And by that I mean that someone here sounds absolutely POSSESSED – either musically or demonically, perhaps both.  

Check out the singer on “Love” for a little taste of Rebecca’s world – crank it up and it’ll summon dogs from the next county.  I know they called the song “love” – and I know she’s singing about “love” – but they way she brings it home it could very well be titled “Being Ripped Apart By A Mountain Lion.”  She gets worked up again during “What Do You Think”, a nifty little bit of psychedelic pop with all the necessary trimmings – fuzz guitar, twangy sitar and wailing background vocals that may be coming from some alternate reality.  The Sunnybrook Farmers freak out even more for “Better Dead Than Red”, a mystical smoke-filled protest song that drives home its point with a break filled with wartime sound effects – gunfire, explosions, an air raid siren – while a jazzy drummer does his best Ginger Baker as an Epileptic impression.  Some backwards tape loops at the end increase the trippiness quotient on this cool little number.  

Other highlights include the frantic “Oh Gosh (Running Through the Forest)”, which mixes Dylanesque vocals with Curved Air electric violin solos, set to an urgent beat-the-clock tempo, and the bizarre “Ma-Ma”, which sounds like a spin on a demented and sinister carnival ride from a Ray Bradbury story – made all the more unsettling by the seemingly unaffected, otherworldly lounge soft pop vocals of our ghostly Hitchcockian Rebecca. 

 So don’t let the band name fool you – these are no more “Sunnybrook Farmers” than the couple who ran Motel Hell.  This is a tripped-out and highly enjoyable psychedelic rock album from the same label who brought you the great Paper Garden album.  Wonder what exactly they were growing down there on Sunnybrook?

I try to grade as best as I can, and I list as many blemishes/imperfections I can find (writing, ringwear, scuff marks, etc.) – Also, please note that I DO listen to these albums – I may not listen to every track, but my grades are based on LISTENING, not just looking at it, since chances are you’ll be listening to the record you buy, not just looking at it.  Most of the albums I sell are the ones I’ve enjoyed for years – and I treat my records with kid gloves.  But sounds speak louder than words, so check out the sound clips below – they’re from the actual record you’re bidding on. 

SHIPPING AND PACKAGING

Listen, I buy a bunch of records too (when I’m not getting outbid at the last second, which is more often than not) – and I know what it’s like to get a rare, one-of-a-kind album packaged dangerously in a flimsy bubblewrap package.  I hate that too.  So rest assured, I ALWAYS package albums with stiff cardboard reinforcements, same for 45s.  And yes, the records are removed from the sleeves (for albums).  I ship out once a week, every Friday, because I have a regular day job.  But I’d be willing to give that up if you’d all be so kind as to bid my items up to stupidly high amounts. 

 For more security and international tracking, you may request GLOBAL PRIORITY MAIL - but bear in mind the cost of this service is upwards of $30.  For expensive items, however, it may be well worth it.  Unfortunately, there isn’t a cost-effective way of tracking parcels to foreign countries yet, and shipping times vary depending on your country’s postal system.   Italy in particular seems to be really bad at delivering packages quickly, or delivering packages at all, now that you mention it.  I will always email you when your package ships, but once it’s on its way, please don’t ask me when it will arrive because I don’t know.  If the world’s postal systems can ever agree on a universal tracking system that’s affordable, I’ll be the first to use it.
