RED DIRT.
1970 UK FONTANA ORIGINAL.
STL 5540

MONSTER RARE .
CONDITION EXELLENT.
Without any shaddow of doubt this is one of the most highly sought after UK ORIGINAL vinyl releases . Back in 1970 when this beauty was released they only pressed 200 copies. This information can be varified for proof in the November 2008 edition of Record collector magazine, number 355 available from www.recordcollectormag.com
It is a fact that I would encourage all potential bidders to give real considderation to . So of the 200 pressed 42 years ago , how many exist today ? Of the few that have survived ,how many look and play as well as this BEAUTY you see here ? My guess and thats all any of us can do, is no more than a handfull . In my 34 years of searching record fairs and colectors shops I never came across a single copy. Eaby has changed the collectors world. EVERYTHING, sooner or later finds its way to eBay. Yet how many of these do you see in a year ? ONE if you are extremely lucky. That is due to three reasons only ! Firstly this GEM is EXCRUCIATINGLY RARE ! Secondly it is so highly prised by the worlds most serious collectors , if they are lucky enough to find a copy ,they will NEVER part with it , so they all remain tucked away in the best record collections in the world. Lastly this LP is absolutely MAGNIFICENT ALL THE WAY THROUGH.
The heavy English blues music is among the best you will ever hear.Led Zeppelin eat your heart out !
CONDITION.
The sleeve has very slight damage to the top left corner visable if you double click the pictures. The bottom left corner has a tiny ammount of ware on it and ive only mentioned it to be hyper crytical . If these two tiny flaws were not there id be grading the sleeve as Mint , but they are there so it has to be a very strong VERY GOOD ++ . All the spinal writings are fully intact and can be read clearly.
The vinyl.
Side one I can only see three tiny hairlines when the record is tilted towards the light. Side two is the same and to see faults you have to really search.
Both side one and side two are mirror like when tilted toward the light and they have the highest lustery sheen . Double click the pictures you will see what I mean. Have a look at those MAGNIFICENT FONTANA black and silver slightly textured labels. Absolutely magnifcent . Look around the spindle whole on side 1 I can see only 4 very slight spindle marks, and on side 2 there are only 2, and they are unbelievably feint .I test played the record 3 times . I played it really loud looking to find fault. This LP should be always played loud. The only faults on this LPs playing, come in the deadwax . If your searching for faults its the only place you will find any. Very slight crackle in the deadwax on side one and its virtually none existant on side 2 .The record plays SUPERBLY . No jumps. No sticking . NO skips. This record has been played but its been loved and treated with the utmost respect by an owner that understood the importance of this great item.To find a better copy I think you would have your hands seriously full. The vinyl I would grade as a srong EXELLENT but it plays MINT- .

POINTS OF INTEREST:
During the course of this auction im very lucky to have been contacted by Deepinder who is a personal friend of the band RED DIRT.
Firstly thanks Deep, the information has certainly given me a better perspective on this LP . Ive loved these songs for a long time and now I have
a deeper understanding of both the LP and the enigmatic sleeve both as a unique and outstanding body of work .
There is a song called Newbold Gold wich is a reference to where Steve Howden comes from. The name RED DIRT is in that song !
When the LP was released band member Dave Richardson who wrote most of the songs didnt even know and was told it had been put out by a friend.
The band did not get paid but recorded the LP because their mate Geoff Gill invited them to use Morgan Studios during their "down time" so they could sell the recording to FONTANA as some kind of tax fiddle or just hope that it might be a good seller back then record companies tried lots of stuff to generate business.
The magnificent LP sleeve was done by a designer called Barney Bubbles ( a guy called Colin Fulcher) he was calling himself Teenburger for a little while.
For years I believed as do record collector that the guy in the picture is Geronimo. I can now confirm he is not ! Geronimo was an old man when his famous photo was taken and the red Indian in this picture was around 25 when this photo was taken in 1870. This will be confirmed next year when Deeps book comes out .
I asked Deep whats the Blood all about on the Indians face ? I wanted to know this for years. The band was already called RED DIRT . When Barney Bubbles
was thinking about the cover he since he was a 50s kid watched the Cowboys and Indians films at the Saturday pictures. Later they were shown on TV and he rememberd the poor treatment of the Red Indians . The Cowboys and the Cavelry used to call the Native Americans RED DIRT even in the movies.
When Barney saw the picture blown up to LP size he realised the printers dots looked like bullet holes so he wrote out RED DIRT as dots being bullet holes with the blood comming from those holes . A very poweful image.
For those of you that have toyed with adding this gem to your collection but not heard the LP take the time to go to youtube and play these songs Summer madness laced with Newbald gold or Problems or Death of a dream ( does the blues get any better than this ?) Not to my knowledge , but its the whole album . From start to finish the LP just keeps killing you. Thats a real added bonus that you dont get with the likes of Dr Z or Heavy Petting Dr strangly strange indeed both fine sleeve but the music is definately lacking.
EYES UP RED DIRT FANS .
Legally this is all im allowed to say . KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED NEXT YEAR some events could happen that will certainly raise this band profile considderably . That is sure to create a histeria of interest in the already swiftly rising in value LP . And rightly so. Talent of this calibre should never go unoticed and the fact things are happening for this band 42 years after this recording is testament to the fact they were before their time . Thats is a quality found too rarely in artists these days.
And here it is . RED DIRT by RED DIRT on UK FONTANA in a MAGNIFICENT LP in MAGNIFICENT CONDITION.
To the serious collectors out there , TREAT YOURSELF !

I can only put this down to the rubbish constantly peppering us from every angle of the media ,that all over the planet times are hard.
