Review: Kotekan, for Percussion Quartet, is inspired by Balinese Gamelan music. “Kotekan” is a style of playing fast interlocking parts in most varieties of Balinese Gamelan music. One of the most interesting and impressive aspects of Balinese Gamelan music is this technique (Kotekan) of using very close cooperation to play what sounds like a single line, but would be physically impossible for any single player to perform. Usually each player performs a relatively simple pattern, rhythm or motive, however, once performed in the ensemble it becomes part of some sensational and enigmatic music.
